Supported YouTube Video Formats

YouTube Videos, as you all know, is now owned by Google & is a great place to share videos. But did you know that YouTube Video Format has restrictions? I came to know about this just recently when I tried to upload a video, waited for upload to finish, only to be later shown an error message (after all the waiting) that the video format was not supported. Just so that it helps others save time by only uploading YouTube supported video formats in YouTube Videos, here is an article that tells you about the video formats that are supported & the ones that are not.

Video Formats Supported by YouTube

Before we jump to the YouTube Video format section, let me share my recent experience. I recently tried to upload a swf file. The file size was right & there was no issues. And the progress bar did show the progress thereby making me believe that nothing was wrong with the video and that the upload would be completed within next few minutes. After waiting for the upload to finish, I was only disappointed to face an error message that meant that the SWF file was not supported file type in YouTube videos! So that wasted my time as I was in a hurry and I had to give up the file upload only to attend to it later.

So I looked for the supported video formats in YouTube and I did find official information on it. So I have compiled the list here for your easy review:

YouTube Supported Video Formats

  • .FLV – Adobe-FLV1 video codec, MP3 audio
  • .AVI – Many cameras output this format – typically the video codec is MJPEG and audio is PCM
  • .WMV – Windows Media Video (WMV) is a video compression format for several proprietary codecs developed by Microsoft.
  • .MPEGPS – Typically supporting MPEG2 video codec and MP2 audio
  • .MPEG4, 3GPP,  .MOV – Typically supporting h264, mpeg4 video codecs, and AAC audio codec
  • WebM – Vp8 video codec and Vorbis Audio codecs
  • .MP4 – I personally produce all my videos in MP4 format as it produces smaller file size and let’s the video run in HD 720p and 1080p.

YouTube Unsupported Video Formats

  • Audio files (MP3, WAV, etc.)
  • Image files (JPG, PNG, etc.):
  • MSWMM and WLMP
  • .proj, .project, or any other Project files
