What is Dashboard?

An IT Business Dashboard is a visual display or a real-time user interface that gives a snapshot of the chief data that are essential for a business  (often) on a single screen, at a glance. Many times, this data is presented in a visually pleasing manner and can include graphics, so that organization of data makes much more sense.

So essentially, they are nothing but software installed to organize & provide business data in consolidated format using a rich user interface system that offers a highly functional, feature-rich integrated graphical view of business data. Most dashboard providers let business users create custom parameters as well, so that the displayed data can be adjusted according to the needs of the business.

Why to use IT Business Dashboards?

For an IT business, monitoring crucial business data at regular intervals is essential for it’s growth and success. If this data is scattered, it could take much time to get a summary of the required information and thus cost productivity. So in order to save time on collecting this “scattered” data and provide it to the business users in a consolidated space, Business Dashboards are used.

IT Business Dashboards software generally provides the graphical presentation of the current status of a business. This information can include, but not limited to, the historical trends of an organization’s key performance indicators (KPIs), important data such as Sales data, Financial data, Operational data, etc. by making much use of GUI elements such as 3D Graphs, Charts, Pie-Charts, etc.

All this data is often provided on a single page/screen so that business decisions can be taken instantly by just merely glancing at the data. If needed, this data can also be shared/exported in formats such as JPG, PDF, PPT, etc. and even email to other users.

How to use Business Dashboards?

To use them, all one really needs to know is how to use a browser. As the core functionality of the dashboard is to present the data by making use of rich GUI apps, the actual usage of the dashaboards is as simple as just clicking & selecting and configuring few required options. Most of these Business Dashboard providers make use of databases like Oracle,MS SQL Server, DB2, mySQL, Sybase etc to build their dashboard app.

In corporate environments, in general, most of the initial setup of the dashboards is done by the related IT department by initially setting up access to source databases and/or to the queries. In some other cases, business users may themselves be able to do this on their own, without requiring IT department’s intervention.

However, the backend of the application needs to be setup only on the Server from where it can be accessed with the help of a browser from any of the desktops and this is taken care of, generally, by the developers or the IT department.
